During the week of March 21, in the city of Chicago alone, gangbangers killed ten people and wounded another forty. The youngest fatality was only six years old. The youngest person wounded was only one year old. Many of the victims were pedestrians sprayed with bullets in drive by shootings. The national news has said nothing about this. So why does one shooting in Florida warrant weeks of national news? Why have there been thousands of articles each day, for the last week, about one single shooting? And why did President Obama, who promised to be a healer not a divider, insert himself into this highly-charged potentially explosive issue?
The killing of Trayvon Martin was tragic. We suspect, however, that few people know the whole story – more and more information is coming out each day much of it not complimentary to Trayvon Martin. That doesn’t matter to Democrats who are using the tragedy to fire up their liberal base, especially among those in the Black community. Even President Obama has gotten involved. “If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon,” Obama said. Race has become the issue. Consider this description of the alleged killer by a Reuters news story:
“Seventeen-year-old Trayvon Martin, dressed in a “hoodie” sweatshirt, was shot dead a month ago in Sanford, Florida by a 28-year-old white Hispanic neighborhood watch volunteer who said he was acting in self-defense.”
A “white Hispanic”? When have you ever heard of someone described as a “white Hispanic”?
Democrats and so-called Black leaders say little about black-on-black crime, drive-by shootings, and gang violence in the Black community. Why? There is no political capital to be gained. Have you ever heard about Derrion Albert, a black 16 year old honor student who was killed in Chicago In September of 2009? Albert was killed by other blacks when he attempted to help a victim in a fight between two rival black gangs.
Yet in this case and others like it, there is a deafening silence from some of the biggest mouths in America. Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Julian Bond, Louis Farrakhan and the Congressional Black Caucus see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil.
Using the Trayvon Martin case to best advantage, Jesse Jackson said, “Blacks are under attack.” But by whom? Black-on-black crime is the leading cause of death among black males ages 18 to 24.
Almost all of the news items about George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin contain a combination of inflammatory statements, opinions presented as facts, transparent distortions, and a complete absence of some of the most relevant details. Almost all news items are written solely from the point of view of the grieving family. The media also fills their articles with outdated baby-faced pictures of Trayvon. Very few include that he was a towering 6’ 2” football player. Is the media really reporting the news, or is this classic agitation/propaganda to advance a political agenda?
All the way back on February 27th, the local Orlando Fox station interviewed the witness who dialed 911. Almost none of the thousands of articles since have mentioned any of the details described by the witness. Some, however, have attributed false statements to this witness. On March 16th, the Sanford police department released new details to the Orlando Sentinel. Once again, these details have been ignored or changed by the media.
- The witness reports that George Zimmerman was on the ground and Trayvon is on top of him punching him.
- The witness says that George Zimmerman was screaming and yelling for help.
- Police arrive and find Zimmerman bleeding on his face and the back of his head. He also has had grass stains on his back. All this confirms the story told by Zimmerman and the witness.
- Police play the 911 tape for Trayvon Martin’s father, who tells police that the voice screaming is not the voice of his son.
The neighborhood this took place in has seen a lot of crime. Would you be surprised to learn that there were eight burglaries, nine thefts, and a shooting just in the past year? In fact, the local homeowners association reports that George Zimmerman actually caught one thief and aided in the apprehension of other criminals. The Miami Herald wrote about this on March 17th. None of the thousands of articles and cable news segments that came after thought this was important.
The media also characterizes Trayvon as a model student. In fact, he was under a five day suspension when the shooting took place. That is why he was staying at a house so far from his school on a school night. A lawyer for Trayvon’s family has blocked access to his school records. What did Trayvon Martin do to get suspended for five days?
As usual, Al Sharpton has had something to say about the Trayvon Martin killing. Do you remember the Al Sharpton/Tawana Brawley incident? “In 1987, when she was 15 years old, Brawley received media attention when she accused six white men, some of whom were police officers, of raping her.” Sharpton got involved and hyped the story. After hearing evidence, a grand jury concluded in October 1988 that Brawley had not been the victim of a forcible sexual assault and that she herself may have created the appearance of an attack. The New York prosecutor whom Brawley had accused as one of her alleged assailants successfully sued Brawley and her three advisers for defamation.
One of those advisers was Sharpton. “The jury found Sharpton liable for making seven defamatory statements against one of the
defendants.” In 2004, Sharpton was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for president. He makes regular guest appearances on Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC. He is the host of MSNBC’s “Politics Nation,” a nightly talk show.
Supporting false accusations and being sued for defamation has not stopped Sharpton’s career. In fact, it seems to have enhanced it. He’s still considered a spokesman for the Black community. In his position as an MSNBC host, Sharpton has organized and led several protest demanding the arrest and prosecution of Zimmerman.
In the end, the death of Trayvon Martin will be used to widen the racial divide in America. It’s sad to think that this young man’s death is being used as a political prop to win the next election
