Last Tuesday, Congressman Joe Walsh (IL-8) encouraged residents of Illinois’ 8th Congressional District to help honor area veterans by nominating them for a Congressional Veteran Commendation (CVC). Take a minute and contact Rep. Walsh and help America recognize our military’s wartime sacrifices.
The Congressional Veteran Commendation, in conjunction with the Veterans History Project sponsored by the Library of Congress, is a nominations-based program designed to formally recognize the wartime sacrifices and peacetime community involvement of residents of Illinois’ 8th Congressional District and to preserve their stories for future generations of Americans.
“It is important that we continue to honor and recognize our veterans for their service to this country,” Walsh said. “This is great opportunity for the community to come together and help us do just that. I look forward meeting and honoring this year’s nominees.”
Anyone interested in nominating a deserving veteran for this honor should visit Congressman Walsh’s website, walsh.house.gov, to download a nomination form.
To be eligible, veterans must currently reside in Illinois’ 8th Congressional District. Nominees must have served as active duty military personnel or been reservists called to active duty. They also must be retired or honorably discharged from a branch of the United States Armed Forces.
Anyone may serve as a nominator and may nominate as many veterans as desired. Veterans are also eligible to nominate themselves for the CVC. Complete nomination forms should be mailed, faxed, or hand-delivered to Congressman Walsh’s Fox Lake office no later than Monday, April 23rd, 2012. Congressman Walsh will publicly honor CVC nominees and recipients during a special ceremony to be held the evening of April 30, 2012, at the Vehe Barn located at 23570 West Cuba Road, Deer Park, Illinois.
In addition to the CVC ceremony, nominators and nominees may submit electronic copies of photographs, letters home or other items for display during the CVC ceremony. With consent, submitted materials and information on nominees will be shared with the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project.
