Illinois Legislature Hits Roadblock over Taxes and Video Gambling
An Illinois appellate court ruled January 26 that lawmakers have to start over if they want to raise taxes and legalize video gambling to pay for a $31 billion statewide construction plan known as “Illinois Jobs Now”. Lawmakers tried to put too much into one piece of legislation, appeals judges rule.
Illinois’ $31 billion public works program hit a roadblock when the First District appellate court deemed that state lawmakers didn’t properly assemble the pieces of a deal that legalized video poker and raised taxes on candy, beauty products, liquor and license plate stickers.

Topinka Offers Alternatives to State Bankruptcy
After House leader Eric Cantor announced states will not get bailouts, Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka appeared on Fox Business News to put forth her list of “painless” cuts.
“States should not get bailouts,” Topinka says, “We need to carry our own weight.
