I ran into Ida, that Independent voter I told you about that I find charming except that she has this pig-headed resistance to Progressive government. I chided her for the negative ads your opponent has been running. I just don’t think that sort of mudslinging has any place in American politics. Just yesterday, I saw a TV spot that claimed that you accused George Bush of being irresponsible and unpatriotic for running up a $300 billion deficit in one year and increasing the national debt by three trillion dollars in only eight years. Then they pointed out that you were running up trillion dollar deficits annually and had increased the national debt by five trillion dollars in three and a half years. The Left in America hated George Bush’s No Child Left Behind Act and his initiative that proposed taking money from or closing poor performing schools. For years, parents have pointed the at teachers unions and the nation’s public school systems as the reasons for poor test scores and Americans students performing poorly when measured against students from other countries. Hubris (/hu-brɪs/), also hybris, means extreme haughtiness, pride or arrogance.
This affliction, which is very common in Washingtonand virtually every state capital, often indicates a loss of contact with reality and an overestimation of one’s own competence or capabilities, especially when the person exhibiting it is in a position of power. (more…)
